First grade teachers work with children as they make progress through a continuum of early reading behaviors. Skills and strategies are practiced as needed with the whole class, small groups, and individuals. Some of these skills include:

Students alalyze selections of fiction, non-fiction and poetry for literary elements such as: Character Setting Plot Sequence of events, and Organization of text

Some of these include: Use phonetic strategies to decode words Use meaning making strategies (what makes sense, what looks right, what sounds right) Read sight words Identify facts and the main idea, sequence events, define and differentiate characters

Students read and comprehend a variety of printed materials including consumer information and directions.   Second graders read and listen to quality children's literature by noted authors. They study authors, illustrators, and genres.   Children continue their learning by talking about literature and relating books to their own experiences.   We hope to further second graders' love for reading and learning.
