Math Curriculum

Numeration and Counting

  • Read and write numerals to 1000
  • Count from different numbers by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's, 12's, and 100's
  • Add and subtract numbers 0 - 20 (perform basic addition and subtraction facts at a rate of 20 facts per minute)
  • Compute sums and differences of two-digit numbers
  • Identify numbers as odd and even
  • Read and write simple fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 2/3, 3/4)
  • Identify, count, and compare money amounts

     

Geometry

  • Identify attributes, classify, label, compare, and draw lines, line segments, and curved, straight, open, and closed lines
  • Identify attributes, classify, label, and make a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, prism, sphere, cone, cube, and pyramid
  • Create shapes by combining or dividing other shapes
  • Identify attributes of symmetry

Problem Solving

  • Formulate problems from everyday situations
  • Use strategies to solve a variety of problems
  • Use mental computation strategies
  • Solve problems using learned strategies
  • Communicate about mathematical ideas, data, and situations in written and oral language

Data Analysis

  • Determine data needed for study and design a survey
  • Read, construct, and label simple data displays, including bar graphs, pictographs, tables, and tally charts
  • Perform simple activities involving probability and predict most and least likely outcomes

MEASUREMENT

Study of measurement in second grade includes using standard and non-standard units:

  • Volume&emdash;cup, pint, quart
  • Temperature&emdash;degree
  • Clock time&emdash;time to the hour and half hour, quarter hour, minute
  • Length&emdash;explorations with inches, feet, yards, meters
  • Weight&emdash;explorations with ounces, pounds

Patterns

  • Identify, explain, and state a rule or prediction about the continuation of a pattern
  • Draw inferences and make decisions from data organized in tables, charts, and line graphs
