Welcome to
Mariposa! This is my first year as Assistant Principal at Mariposa
Elementary School, and I am so excited to be a part of this
incredibly talented staff! I have enjoyed my first few weeks at
Mariposa, and I have had a chance to meet a lot of the Mariposa
students and parents. Thank you for taking the time over the last
few weeks to welcome me to Mariposa!
I’d
like to share some information with you. I am a native Phoenician
born and raised in the Phoenix metropolitan area. I received
my Bachelor's degree in Elementary and Special Education from
Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. While teaching in
the Kyrene School District, I completed my Master's Degree in
Education in Counseling at Arizona State University. A decade later,
I decided it was time to go back to school and continue my formal
education. Currently, I am in the process of completing my Doctoral
degree in Educational Administration through Northern Arizona
University. My estimated graduation date is December 2009!
For
the past eighteen years, I have been working in the field of
education in a variety of roles. I began my career teaching special
education in the Cartwright Elementary School District in west
Phoenix. After a brief time, I was hired at the Tempe Elementary
School District and taught first grade. At the end of three years, I
packed up and moved to Fairfax, Virginia, located just outside of
Washington, D.C., and spent a year guest teaching in the Fairfax
County School District. The most exceptional component of this
experience was that I had time to explore Washington, D.C. and the
surrounding states for an entire year! Weekly I took the metro
transit system into Washington, D.C. and spent time absorbing all of
the historical sites, interesting places, monuments, and museums
available. As you can imagine, it was a fabulous year! In 1994, I
was hired to teach in the Kyrene School District. I taught first,
third, and fourth grade at Cerritos Elementary School. I moved to
the Kyrene District Office four years later to work as a Technology
Trainer to help mentor and coach teachers in integrating technology
into teaching and learning. In 2002, I left the district to pursue a
position at ASSET-KAET Channel 8-ASU. In this role, I trained
teachers throughout the state of Arizona to effectively use
technology to enhance teaching and learning. Well, you can come home
again, because in 2004, I had the wonderful opportunity to return to
the Kyrene School District to work as an Assistant Director in the
Curriculum and Assessment Department. I have worked in this role for
the past four and a half years. This year, I will work as an
Assistant Director in Curriculum and Assessment Department half
time, and I will be the half time Assistant Principal at Mariposa
Elementary School!
When
I have free time, I enjoy traveling, attending cultural events and
Broadway shows with family and friends, watching movies, jogging,
and sitting down with a cup of hot tea to read a good book. When you
are on campus, please drop by and introduce yourself. I look forward
to meeting you!
