Problem Solving

Lifeskills Make a Difference!

“Friendship Matters!”

Problem solving is defined as: “to create solutions for difficult situations and everyday problems.”

The ability to solve problems is a prized commodity in the workplace and invaluable in our personal and    family lives.  Life is composed of one problem-solving experience after another and the more opportunities we present to students to practice handling real problems, the more effective they will become at this skill.

Students are successful at problem solving when they:

· Think of many solutions for a problem, rate the choices, then determine which is the best choice

· Enjoy a puzzle or a challenge

· Persevere until they find answers

· Share their thinking and reasoning with classmates

· Ask another person’s opinion

· Discuss misunderstandings in a calm, reasonable manner

Problem solving is an innate ability that we all possess.  Effective problem solving is an invaluable skill that needs to be taught, modeled, and practiced as often as possible.
