The Kyrene Special Programs Preschool is an integrated program which provides an opportunity for special needs children to interact with their typically developing peers as they all grow, develop and learn together.  Children are between the ages of three to five years old (not eligible age for kindergarten).  Our preschool offers services to children with many different special needs.  These children may be challenged in one or more ways; developmentally delayed, speech and language delayed, vision or hearing impaired.  We are excited that we also have typically developing children as a part of our program.  They participate in developmentally appropriate activities and become our language models.  Our preschool has a developmental curriculum with an emphasis on language development and acquisition.  We want to enhance communication skills so that all our children learn to interact with others in appropriate ways.  We want to encourage creativity and a love of learning.  Our staff helps children improve their motor and self-help skills, and encourages children as they learn to make choices.  We are advocates for children's play time and attempt to capitalize on a child's natural inclination to learn through play.

Kyrene Special Programs Preschool classes follow the Kyrene School District calendar.  Each class has a certified teacher, speech/language specialist and an assistant.  Classes include approximately 7 typically developing students and 7-9 special needs students.  All children go through a screening to be placed in the program whether special needs or typical.

All of our classes are 2 1/2 hours long, either an A.M. or a P.M. session.  We offer a 4 day-a-week class that meets Monday Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  The 4 day-a-week class is offered at Kyrene de las Brisas, Kyrene de los Cerritos, Kyrene del Cielo, Kyrene de la Estrella, Kyrene de las Lomas, Kyrene de las Manitas and Kyrene del Milenio Elementary Schools.  We also have a 3 day-a-week class available at Kyrene de las Brisas on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  Kyrene de los Cerritos and Kyrene de la Estrella have a 3 day-a-week class on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Typically Developing Children:  If you have a typically developing child and would like to place your child's name on our waiting list to be screened, please fill out the Typical Peer Application below and send to the address on the application.  We will add your child's name to our waiting list.  When an opening arises, parents are called in order of when we received their application.  Exceptions to this may be made if it is necessary to balance the class by age of children or by boys and girls.  Priority will be given to children of employees and siblings of children currently in our preschool.  If you are called for an opening, you will be asked to take your child into the classroom for a short screening, usually 30-45 minutes.  The staff observes to see that the child appears to exhibit typical development, age appropriate social interactions and if the child attends to tasks for an age appropriate length of time.  They will also listen for age appropriate English language skills.  If your child is accepted, he/she will then be placed at that school.  You will be given instructions on how to register your child with the school office.

Our typically developing children pay tuition.  The 4 day-a-week class is $160.00 per month and our 3 day-a-week class is $125.00 per month.  Limited scholarships funds are available for those in need of financial assistance.  Scholarship requests are individually assessed based upon financial criteria.  Scholarship applications are available by clicking on Financial Assistance Application below.  This application must be accompanied by a copy of the two most recent paycheck stubs and a copy of the most recent federal income tax form.  Scholarships will not exceed 50% of tuition.

Special Need Children:  If you have any concerns on your child's development or feel your child needs to be tested for speech and language delays, please call us at (480)783-4130 to set up an appointment for a Special Needs Screening.  These screenings are held once a month, August through May.  You must be a current resident in the Kyrene School District and your child must be at least 2 yrs and 9 mos. up to 5 year olds that are not eligible for kindergarten.  This screening determines if a child has a potential disability that requires further evaluation.  If so, a full evaluation will be done to determine whether a child is eligible for placement in the preschool as a special needs child.  An Individualized Educational Program (IEP) will be developed to meet the child's needs.  Itinerant speech/language services are also provided when appropriate.  If your special needs child has already had an evaluation done outside of the KSD and/or has a current IEP, please call the above number, we will take information from you and forward it to our evaluation team for a record review.  These children do not normally attend the Special Needs Screening.
