American Parent Advisory Committee Hosts Back to School Pot Luck & Ice
Cream Social
The Kyrene Native American Parent Advisory
Committee invites you and your family to share a pot luck dinner and ice
cream social with your community. Please bring your favorite
Native dish to share and NAPAC will provide the ice cream and door
prizes!!

Importance of AIMS to You and Your Child
Why is doing well on AIMS important to
you and your child? Students need to pass AIMS in the Meets
category in Math, Reading and Writing to receive a High School
Diploma.
Students could qualify for free in-state college tuition or
other college scholarships if they can reach the Exceed category
in Math, Reading and Writing on AIMS. Find out what this

3rd Annual Take Charge! Native American Leadership Today Conference
The
Southwestern Institute for the Education of Native Americans (SIENA) is
currently accepting registrations for the 3rd Annual Take Charge! –
Native American Leadership Today conference. This important
conference is geared toward parents and students in grades 7-12.
Conference goal: To discuss the need for effective leadership by and
for Native Americans and how to take charge of one’s own health and
education.
Keynote Speaker: Mr. Billy Mills – Olympic Gold Medalist in the
10,000 meter run at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. A Lakota Sioux, Mr.
Mills is the only American to ever win this race at the Olympic Games!

Spend an Evening with Leslie Marmon Silko at the Heard Museum
Internationally acclaimed author Leslie Marmon Silko, Laguna Pueblo,
will deliver the fall Simon Ortiz and Labriola Center Lecture on
Indigenous Land, Culture and Community on Thursday, October 8 at 7 p.m.
at Phoenix’s Heard Museum. This semi-annual lecture series is held
through a partnership between the Heard Museum and Arizona State
University.
"An Evening with Leslie Marmon Silko" will begin with a reading by the
author from her forthcoming memoir, Turquoise Ledge, followed by
an informal discussion with the audience.

Fair
Mark your calendars to attend thie 6th
Annual Native Foods & Craft Fair at Pueblo Grand Museum. Spend the
day enjoying crafts, food, hand-on activities, demonstrations, a pumpkin
patch, frybread and a watermelon eating contest. Admission and
activities are free.

Relatives As Parents - R.A.P.
Are you a caregiver raising your
relative's children? Would you like to catch up on the
latest parenting information as well as learn about special topics
related to parenting? This monthly support group is
available for caregivers raising their relative's children and is
FREE. This group meets the first Tuesday of every month.
There are also support groups offered for children ages 8-12 who
are being raised by a relative. Please call the Family
Resource Center for additional information or to register.
