Fun Summer Activities

Reading and playing games is a great way to enjoy each other's company while keeping skills fresh.  Here are some great summer reading books and a fun math skills game.

The Butterfly Dance,
Gerald Dawavendewa
Dreamcatcher,
Audrey Osofsky
Coyote in Love with a Star,
Marty Kreipe de Montaño

Grades 3 – 5:
Indian Shoes,
Cynthia Leitich Smith
Beardance,
Will Hobbs

Grades 6 – 8:
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,
Sherman Alexie
The Birchbark House,
Louise Erdrich

Math Shoe Game
Use a shoe holder with pockets, or take a large piece of butcher paper and draw 10 large rectangles.  Label the pockets or rectangles with the numbers 1 – 10.  Have the children make shoe cutouts marked with numbers from 1 – 5.  Mix up all the left shoes into one pile and all the right shoes into another pile.  Have each child select a left shoe and a right shoe.  Then have the child add the two numbers and put the pair of shoes into the pocket or onto the rectangle labeled with the correct sum.
This activity can be modified to practice subtraction, multiplication or division by adjusting the numbers on the pockets and shoes.

Mammograms for Uninsured Women Available

The Arizona Department of Health Services has funds to pay for mammograms for uninsured women or those with high deductibles (greater than $100) for screening services. Qualified candidates must be 40 years of age or older. Also, if further diagnostics or treatment is needed, ADHS will be able to pay for that follow-up as well.
Please
call 480-967-3767 or 1-800-285-0272.  The MOM (Mobile on site Mammography) staff will qualify you and give you an option of locations.
ADHS would very much like to use these funds to benefit local uninsured and underinsured women.
