eNews for Kyrene's
Native American Community
March 4, 2009
A
HUGE Thank You!
NAPAC participated in three very
successful fry bread sales during the past months, including the Chandler
Multicultural Festival, and the Kyrene de las Lomas and Kyrene de la
Mariposa Multicultural Festivals. A huge, heart-felt thank you to all the
wonderful volunteers who came out to help and shared their
time and talents with the community!
Join us for the next fry bread sale!
It's a great opportunity to meet other Native American families in
the community.

Help Your Child Do Well on Tests
AIMS testing
begins March 30th and concludes
April 17th. Please review your school newsletter for up-to-date
information about testing dates and times. Following are some
suggested ways you can help your child do well on tests:
-
Talk with your child’s teacher often to
monitor your child’s progress and find out what you can do at
home to help your child.
-
Make sure your child does his or her
homework
-
Make sure your child has regular
attendance at school.
-
Make sure your child is well rested and
eats a well-rounded diet.
-
Have a variety of books and magazines at
home to encourage your child’s curiosity.
-
Don’t be overly anxious about test scores,
but encourage your child to take tests seriously.
-
Don’t judge your child on the basis of a
single test score.

National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
March 20, 2009, marks the third annual National Native HIV/AIDS
Awareness Day (NNHAAD). HIV continues to increase among Native
American people, as it has over the past decade. This day will
challenge us to work together, in harmony, to create a greater
awareness of the risk of HIV/AIDS to our Native communities. Call
the Native American Pathways program at Native Health
(602-279-5262 x 3213) for information and referrals for testing
and the latest treatment options. If we all do our part to know
our HIV status and avoid risk behaviors we will be part of the
diminished occurrence of HIV/AIDS among Native peoples.
This year’s event will be held at the Phoenix Indian Medical
Center from 10am – 2pm on Friday, March 20th.

Tell us what you think!
Please share your celebrations and suggestions with us! How are
the current Native American Student Services programs and Native
American Parent Advisory Committee serving your family's needs?
Please send your thoughts and suggestions for improvement to
Terry to use as we plan 2009/10 services. Here are some
questions to help get you started:
·
What are your top three priorities for Native American programming in
Kyrene?
·
What services are provided that you like?
·
What services are provided that you think should change? How?
·
How do you think we could increase participation in the Native American
Parent Advisory Committee meetings and events? (What would
encourage you to come?)
Thank you so much
for providing your valuable input!
