Finding s from Kyrene Community Meeting
On Tuesday, May 26, Kyrene held a community meeting as a follow up to the March 2009, roof collapse of the Waggoner Elementary School Multi-purpose room. During the meeting, experts from Gervasio and Associates, structural engineers, Porter Construction, and district staff were available to provide information regarding the investigation of the roof collapse and the plans for the reconstruction of the new MPR. Information shared in the meeting confirmed that the probable cause of the roof collapse was multiple roof truss failures due to overload.
Since the collapse, all Kyrene sites have been inspected by a structural engineer. The inspections showed all sites to be safe, and showed that in general, the structural condition of all of our schools was above average.

Kyrene Community Meeting
On Tuesday, May 26, 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm, the Kyrene School District is hosting a
Community Meeting related to the Waggoner Elementary School roof collapse.
Scheduled presentations include:

Information regarding the findings of the Waggoner structural review

Contractors will provide an update on the Waggoner Multi-purpose room rebuild
-
Structural engineers will be present to share results of inspections of our other 24 schools and the status of any necessary repairs.

On Monday, March 16, the roof in the multi-purpose room at Waggoner Elementary School in Tempe collapsed. We continue to seek information about how this happened and will share it with the community.
On Tuesday, March 24, 5:00 - 7:00 pm, a Governing Board Study Session will be held to discuss the roof collapse and to share related information. Meeting location is Kyrene District Office, Ben Furlong Center, 8700 South Kyrene Road, Tempe AZ 85284.
On Tuesday, March 17, Superintendent Dr. David Schauer met with the Parent Superintendent Council (PSC) and answered as many questions as he could. (PSC is a group of parents that represent all the PTO’s and PTA’s in the Kyrene district.) On Wednesday morning, March 18, a meeting was held with the Waggoner Elementary PTO. Additionally, Dr. Schauer is sending a community letter home with every Kyrene student which will provide more information on this situation.
