Kyrene Creativity Shines at Chandler Public Library Art Exhibit [Posted 7/17/01]
Elementary, Middle School Student Works on Display at Sunset Branch July 9-July 28

Inspired by the creativity of art instructor Tamara Frey, dozens of elementary and middle school children participating in Kyrene School District’s Kids Club and Club Kyrene childcare programs will display their own artworks at the Sunset Branch of the Chandler Public Library this July. Located at various Kyrene school sites, the Kids Club and Club Kyrene programs are open to Kyrene and non-Kyrene students and feature field trips, swimming, art enrichment, dramatic play, sports, games, and more. Under the guidance of instructor Frey, Kids Club and Club Kyrene artists have created a variety of paintings, drawings, sculptures and 3D art projects, including plaster casts, motor-driven mobiles, storyboards, and woodworking creations.  Many of the projects rely heavily on found or donated items.

The Sunset Library exhibit begins July 9 and will feature an 18-foot bridge constructed through collaboration between elementary and middle school students through July 14.  Artworks created by middle-school students participating in the Club Kyrene program will be featured July 16-21, while the creations of elementary school participants in the Kids Club program will be displayed July 23-28.

Enrichment instructor Tamara Frey earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from Arizona State University.  Frey concentrates on sculpture, and much of her work utilizes woodworking and metalworking techniques. She has recently exhibited her artwork at the Mesa Arts Center.  Frey is passionate about her work with Kids Club and Club Kyrene students.  “I help the children get to know their interests and ambitions by using their creative energy in a positive way,” says Frey.  “Through this they explore their personal qualities and allow their imaginations to be active. The energy present in the art room at the time of activity is beyond words.”

Kyrene Kids Club is a year-round childcare program serving students ages 5-12 and is designed to foster self-awareness, promote cognitive development, build physical skills, and encourage confident creative expression.  During the school year, Kyrene Kids Club offers safe, cost-effective after school childcare.  Students participate in a wide variety of activities, including cooking, exploring science, playing sports, getting creative with arts and crafts, drama, or storytelling, and playing organized indoor and outdoor games.  Homework help is also available. Kyrene Kids Club is located at various school sites throughout the District under the supervision of trained staff. The program features low student to teacher ratios and is open to Kyrene and non-Kyrene students.

Located at Kyrene school sites, Club Kyrene is a year-round program designed to provide a safe place for 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade middle school students to gather during the hours after school.  Through a combination of social interaction, planned activities, and field trips, Club Kyrene highlights adolescent self-awareness, encourages intellectual development, enhances physical skills, fosters creative expression, and offers access to a variety of recreational pursuits.  Students may take advantage of homework assistance or choose from a variety of activities, such as sports, arts and crafts, cooking, science exploration, board games, and drama.  During the summer months, students hone citizenship and life skills by mentoring young children, meeting guest speakers, and participating in community service projects.  Kyrene Kids Club is located at various Kyrene school sites under the supervision of trained staff. The program features low student to teacher ratios and is open to Kyrene and non-Kyrene students.

The Kyrene School District serves more than 20,000 students in kindergarten through eighth grades at 25 schools in the Phoenix Metropolitan area.  In 2001, Kyrene led East Valley schools by earning the highest overall Stanford 9 standardized test scores, demonstrating the District-wide commitment to delivering the highest possible quality education.  Kyrene is a community-centered district that meets the needs of community members through a variety of programs, including year-round childcare, adult, senior, and parent education programs, academic enrichment and assistance services, Summer Academy, and the C.A.S.A. Vida homeschool enrichment center.  District boundaries encompass four municipalities—Tempe, Guadalupe, the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix, and Chandler—and approximately half of the Gila River Indian Reservation.  Kyrene also accepts students who do not live within District boundaries through its Open Enrollment Program.  Seven of the District’s 25 schools are located in Chandler.
