Superintendent's Message:

Dear Staff,

The end of the school year is rapidly approaching and all the trials and tribulations that go along with this are upon us.  As we make summer plans and look toward next year, it is easy to get distracted from the here and now.  John Lennon sang a line in one of his solo albums released after the Beatles broke up that goes, “life is what happens while we are busy making other plans.”  (If you are too young to know who I’m talking about ask a Boomer!)  I personally have to remind myself of this frequently both in my personal and professional life and have learned that greater fulfillment comes from being completely engaged in the present.  Easier said than done!

Let’s remember to help all students stay focused on learning as they begin to separate from their present grade level and/or school.  Every moment we have with them counts so we can fulfill our mission that is continuous academic achievement and personal growth for every student.  In Kyrene, these are not mere words that get “trotted out” for special occasions.  These words are part of our work each and every day as we strive to provide the best possible education for all of our students.  Thank you for being part of the Kyrene team and for your dedication and commitment to the mission.  There is nothing more important than the work we do.

David

Arizona Quest for Kids

Interested in an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child?  AZ Quest for Kids is looking for volunteer mentors, and this would be the perfect opportunity for part-time staff or for anyone retiring at the end of this year.  The purpose of the program is to help kids with high potential from financially disadvantaged families to succeed in school.  Students at Niños Elementary are accepted into the program at the end of 5th grade and paired with an adult mentor.  The following year in 6th grade, the student and mentor meet at KMS on a weekly basis for an hour and participate in occasional field trips.  If the student keeps up his/her grades, has no behavior issues, and stays active in the program, they receive a complete four-year college scholarship upon graduation from high school.  A number of retired Kyrene teachers are part of this program and have found it to be highly rewarding. You are only asked to commit to the program for one year.  The demand on your time is small, but the rewards are significant.

What will it cost you?

Cost of gasoline to drive to hosting school:                         $2.00

Cost of wear and tear on your vehicle                                $3.00

Cost of your time (depending on your salary)                 ±$30.00 once a week

Cost of an annual birthday party                                       $10.00

Cost of watching a child achieve goals & succeed      PRICELESS!!!

An R.N. oversees the facility, and both C.N.A.’s and Childcare technicians will care for your child.  It includes two snacks and lunch as well as fluids for the day.

A simple phone call screening will be conducted to determine if your child can be accepted for a reservation.  You will need to pre-register with the program, before your child is sick, and provide up to date immunization.  Walk-ins are not accepted, so please call now to pre-register for this year and next school year.

 KATT Bulletin

April is Autism Awareness Month.  Wednesday, April 2nd was the First Annual World Autism Awareness Day.  Several schools around Kyrene commemorated this day by wearing pins, bracelets, and t-shirts to support this important cause.  Autism is one of a group of neurological disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). ASD’s are developmental disabilities marked by impairments in social interaction and communication, and may include the presence of rigid routines and repetitive behaviors and interests. Many individuals with ASD have unique styles of learning, attending, and reacting to sensory information. The symptoms can range from mild to very severe. Most students with ASD are visual learners and are best supported in the classroom with visual instruction.  Recent research indicates that 1 in 150 individuals are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The Kyrene Autism Training Team (KATT) is a group of Kyrene educators who have undergone extensive training in the field of Autism.  The KATT team provides professional growth opportunities for Kyrene staff to develop instructional and behavioral strategies appropriate for students with ASD.  The KATT team also provides individual consultation for students with Autism.  If you would like more information about Autism or the Kyrene Autism Training Team, please contact KATT Coordinator, Chris Casanova at extension 4087.
