Message from Dr. Menconi
Dear Kyrene Staff:

As we move into April and into the final quarter of our school year, I want to extend my thoughts of encouragement and success to each of you. I know that in this last quarter you spend much time finishing up your many projects, completing work on unfinished performance objectives, holding a number of Special Events for children and families, and administering state and District assessments. I know that all of you want this last quarter to be memorable and successful for all of our students and I join you in that wish. I also want it to be memorable and successful for you and I want you to know how much all of us here at the Furlong Center appreciate you.

In my last message, I mentioned that the "heart" of Kyrene is the Kyrene staff. I want to take that one step further and particularly thank two important individuals I have had the privilege of working with the last two years. With Certified teaching staff as our largest group of employees, many of my interactions are with the leadership of the Kyrene Education Association, specifically, Margaret Bowerman and Anna Montalbo. These two dynamic women symbolize the "heart" of our District and the soul of so many of our employees. Their positive, focused and helpful information and support are in large part why the district has been able to move and improve in these times of needed change and budgetary challenge. They have contributed many hours of their time and energy to advising me on matters of importance to teachers and other staff and on helping all of us here to plan and successfully implement important plans and policy interpretations. My heartfelt and sincere thanks to them both for their unending and uplifting partnership.

Again, best wishes to all in the coming weeks. I have great confidence that we will end this year more successfully than ever.

Sincerely,
Maria

Lomas Students Achieve Reading Goal
During the month of February the students at Lomas Elementary School had a goal to read 4,050 hours. If they achieved this goal, there would be a Fear Factor Assembly for a teacher in each grade level, the Assistant Principal and Principal. Not only did the students at Lomas reach their goal, but they actually read 5,314 hours. This was 1,264 hours above and beyond the school goal. Every student in Kindergarten through 5th grade did a great job reading for 20 minutes every night. On March 22, the whole school attended a Fear Factor Assembly. A number of teachers and Principal Ev Michell all had to eat snails, fish, dog food, pigs’ feet, drink slime and scoop lizards out of ice water with their feet in front of the students. To top it off, the highest readers in each class got to throw a pie in their teacher’s face.

Kyrene Employees Volunteering Time at Greece Orphanage
This summer 8 Kyrene employees will be volunteering their time in a Greece Orphanage to work with special needs children. While this is not a Kyrene sponsored activity, these individuals will spend 2 weeks sharing their expertise with the children at the orphanage. These individuals have offered to volunteer their time to develop and administer a program that will provide these children with possibly their first opportunity to experience arts and crafts, music therapy, sensory motor activities, and active games. If you are interested in learning more about this volunteer expedition, contact the volunteer team: Alicia Holt, Joanne Thomas, Ann Pinkwasser, Karen Reiss, Michele McCuen, Michele Ferber, Margie Barrows, or Karin Crider.
