Message
from Lois Lalley
Dear
Kyrene Family,
I
want to thank you for the outpouring of support that you
have shown me over the loss of my husband, Michael. Your
thoughts, prayers, and kindness are truly appreciated. So
many of you came to share in the celebration of Mike’s
life, and words can never express what that meant to our
family. I realize how blessed I am to work with
such a wonderful group of people that are always willing
to help a colleague through difficult times.
Sincerely,
Lois J. Lalley

Strategic Planning
A group of parents, teachers, support staff, and
administrators have met a number of times to examine the
vision, mission and goals of the District. This work and
the accompanying work plan have been directed and
approved by the Governing Board. The next step in this
process will be to conduct a Study Session with the
Board to discuss the process and how to gather feedback
and input from the community. More information regarding
Strategic Planning will be provided as it becomes
available, and a Strategic Planning page for the Kyrene
Web site is being developed.

the next two years. Schools and the District Office will
now be closed on the Friday before Winter Break. You can
view the 2005-2006
and 2006-2007
calendars on the Kyrene Web site.

ACE
Club Service Learning Activity
This
year, the Altadeña ACE Club students chose to
participate in a community service activity by raising
funds to donate desperately needed supplies to a local
animal shelter, and to visit the shelter to make their
donation and spend time with the animals. The students
achieved their goal of raising more than $100 ($147.66
exactly) by selling hot chocolate to other students
before school on several chilly winter mornings. The
students were thrilled to receive a generous donation
match from PETCO, Inc. The Altadena ACE Club will visit
the animal shelter on April 29 to make their $300
donation, and to walk the dogs and spend time playing
with the animals. The students are thrilled to be a
service to their community in this way and look forward
to future volunteer opportunities. Kudos to the ACE
teachers and Coordinators Sarah Segal, Sara Braddy, and
Stephanie Leake for their hard work in helping the ACE
students make a contribution in this way.

Cerritos
Unveils Mosaic Wall Mural
On
Thursday, April 21st, at Cerritos’ Annual Celebration
of Learning, a 4th grade mosaic wall mural (5' x 12')
was unveiled. The Artist-in-Residency for this project
was shared by Viki Reed, Art Specialist at Cerritos and
her daughter, Heather Ross, a local mosaic artist.
Working with Mrs. Reed and Mrs. Ross, 4th graders
slabbed the clay, cut their template designs, glazed the
fired pieces and turned them over to Mrs. Ross for
assembling and grouting. The mosaic mural, entitled
"Lifelong Learning Through Many Hands," will
be a permanent installation on the wall outside the
office door. Stop by and see the artwork of these
incredible 4th grade artists!
