Use of Computers and Technology Resources

The use of computers and technology resources in the Kyrene School District is outlined in the Acceptable Use Policy.  The Kyrene School District Governing Board has adopted Policy IIAE, Acceptable Use of Technology Resources.  If so desired, Policy IIAE can be accessed through the Kyrene School District website at: http://www.kyrene.org/policy/iiae.htm

Acceptable Use Procedures and Practices

Kyrene School District

Please read the examples below concerning student use of technology resources.  Please note that students will not be able to use a computer in the Kyrene School District unless the Technology Resources and Internet User Agreement has been signed by the parent or guardian and returned to school.

Please keep in mind that email, Internet and other activities conducted on the Kyrene School District’s information network are a privilege, are monitored by staff, and are not private. Instruction on acceptable use will occur.

The following is a list of acceptable student behaviors using:

Internet

·      Students will access the Internet for educational purposes only (i.e. information retrieval and publishing/sharing work).

Information Network

·        Appropriate access, use of programs and storage of personal files will occur.

·        Technology resources will be used for educational purposes only.

Web Page Development/Publishing

·        Copyright and fair use policies will be followed.

Email

·      Students do not receive personal Kyrene email addresses. However, they may use a group email address assigned to their teacher.

·      Email is for curriculum-related use only.

·      School rules regarding communication apply to email.  Use of profanity, verbal abuse and threatening statements are not tolerated.

All computers are to be used for educational purposes in a responsible, efficient, ethical and legal manner.  Kyrene will take industry-standard precautionary measures to provide a safe learning environment.   However, if a student is exposed to inappropriate material, the student should immediately seek teacher/adult assistance.

Examples of inappropriate uses are listed below.  These examples, not all-inclusive, are compiled to help students and parents understand the kinds of use that are not acceptable, possibly illegal, and/or not safe.

Inappropriate Internet Use

·      Revealing full name, address, phone number, personal email, address or other personal information over the Internet

·      Violating copyright laws

·      Illegally copying or plagiarizing materials

·      Downloading games

·      Downloading files, software, music or documents without permission

·      Accessing, sending or displaying offensive pictures or messages

·      Harassing, insulting, threatening and/or attacking others

·      Retrieving or displaying any material that is defamatory, abusive, obscene, profane, gang-related, sexually threatening or explicit, racially offensive or illegal

·      Using personal Instant Messaging services

Inappropriate Workstation/Network Use

·      Sharing username and password with others

·        Using another person’s account and password

·        Gaining unauthorized access to or vandalizing the data or files of others

·        Gaining or seeking unauthorized access to resources or entities

·        Modifying workstation settings

·        Attempting to harm, modify or gain unauthorized access to district systems or data

·        Destroying software or hardware

·        Interfering with system security

·        Intentionally disrupting network traffic or causing the network and connected systems to crash

·        Degrading or disrupting equipment or system performance

·        Using the network for illegal, inappropriate, or obscene purposes, or in support of such activities

·        Violating copyrights or other contracts violating such matters as institutional or third party copyright, license agreements and other contracts

·        Using Kyrene School District’s computing resources for commercial or financial gain or fraud

·        Stealing data, equipment or intellectual property

·        Possessing any data, which might be considered a violation of these rules, in paper, magnetic (disk), digital (CD), or any other form 

Inappropriate Web Page Development/Publishing

·        Posting copyrighted/trademarked materials (unless written permissions have been received from those who hold rights to specific resources or information)

·        Posting full name, address, phone number, personal email, address, identifying photograph, or other personal information

Inappropriate Email Use

·        Sharing username and password with others

·        Providing personal information (full name, address, telephone number, home email address, identifying photograph, etc.)

·        Violating copyright laws

·        Using another person’s account and/or password

·        Posting anonymous messages

·        Accessing, sending or displaying offensive pictures or messages

·        Using obscene language

·        Harassing, insulting or attacking others

·        Using email as a means to disrupt network systems

·        Using email services from a provider other than Kyrene

Consequences of Violations

Consequences of violations include but are not limited to:

·        Parent notification

·        Restitution to repair or replace intentionally damaged equipment

·        Suspension of Internet access

·        Revocation of Internet access

·        Suspension of network privileges

·        Revocation of network privileges

·        Suspension of computer access

·        Revocation of computer access

·        School suspension

·        School expulsion

·        Legal action and prosecution by the authorities

The Kyrene School District has a right to restrict or terminate information network access.  The Kyrene School District has the right to monitor network activity to maintain the integrity of the information network and to ensure that the acceptable use policy is followed.
