Opened in 1992, Akimel A-al celebrated its 20th anniversary this past school year. The school's name is from the language of the Akimel O'odham (Pima) People and means "Children of the River." It is pronounced "Ah' key mahl." The name was chosen to honor the Akimel O'odham people.

Mark your calendars! Our Evening Under the Stars event is scheduled for November 5, 2014, 5:00-7:30 pm. The evening will include performances by the Estrella Marimba band, the AMS Jazz & Wind Ensemble, AMS Choir, and AMS Orchestra. AMS student artwork will also be on display. Food will be available for purchase from valley food truck vendors. Bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic in our courtyard while you enjoy great student performances!
Based on the spring 2014 AIMS scores, for the second year in a row, Akimel A-al Middle School has been named an “A” school from the Arizona Department of Education. The ADE letter grades consist of a combination of the percentage of students passing the reading and math tests and a measure of improvement from the previous year’s scores. This designation is indicative of the High Standards; High Achievement; High Expectations for All that we demonstrate at Akimel A-al. Congratulations Rattlers!
