The S.T.A.R. (Success Through Academic Reform) Program is an innovative four-week summer program provided for students who require a highly structured, teacher-directed environment to be successful. This initiative provides students with communication arts, mathematics, self-esteem, team building, and study/organizational strategies with the use of incentives to promote student success. A graduation ceremony and an excursion will be the culminating activities for this program. During the 2002 - 2003 school year, each student's progress will continue to be monitored by an identified S.T.A.R. teacher as his or her mentor.
Where
This program is offered at Centennial Middle School. Transportation is
available; pick up and drop off points will be at Pueblo Middle School,
Aprende Middle School, Akimel A-al Middle School, Altadeņa Middle School, and
Kyrene Middle School.
When
S.T.A.R. is a four-week program in session Monday through Thursday from June
9, 2003 to July 3, 2003. The program is offered from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
and will provide communication arts, mathematics, self-esteem and team
building activities, study/organizational strategies, and character building
activities and discussions. Students are given a 40-minute lunch break along
with other small breaks throughout the day.
How
For a student to attend the S.T.A.R. program, the administrative team at their
school must recommend them, and following must be completed:
1. Parents must complete the registration form in the Summer Academy brochure. S.T.A.R. program should be filled in for the course description and S.T.A.R. should be written across the top of the form.
2. The cost to participate in this program is $295 per participant. This fee includes all transportation fees, all materials and supplies, and the cost for all of the planned field trips. Fee must be attached to registration and sent to the Community Education Department.
3. Deadline for a verbal commitment to the program is Friday, May 23, 2003.
4. Deadline for registration and payment is Wednesday, May 28, 2003.
5. Parents must attend the S.T.A.R. Orientation and Meet the Teacher night on Thursday, June 5, 2003 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Centennial Middle School.
The summer S.T.A.R. teachers will facilitate and supervise student work as specified. The teachers will monitor student progress correct and grade assignments, and assess objectives to verify mastery.
