Interesting Facts About Kyrene
» K-8 School District founded August 6, 1888 by Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. Currently there are 19 elementary schools and 6 middle schools.
» Originally nine families with seventeen children petitioned for the Kyrene School District to be formed. In those days, the school year was shorter because most students worked on their farms.
» The average elementary school building is 76,388 square feet while the average middle school runs 152,543 square feet. The first school building was only ten feet by twelve feet!
» A suburban district of approximately 18,500 students in 1000 classrooms located in 3 cities ― Tempe, Chandler and Phoenix (Ahwatukee). Enrollment is available to any student who lives within or outside of the Kyrene School District’s boundaries, pending space and program availability.
» Demographics include: 62.27% Caucasian, 15.54% Hispanic, 9.52% Black, 3.35% Native American, 8.81% Asian
» Kyrene also serves students who are considered homeless under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, reauthorized along with No Child Left Behind Act in 2002. Currently Kyrene has 196 homeless students and 93 refugee students.
