Scholars at Kyrene del Milenio School Take on the World!

A team at Kyrene del Milenio Elementary School in Phoenix competed with thousands of students in the United States and several foreign lands in the 2007 Winter Knowledge Master Open academic competition on January 24th. More than two hundred and forty elementary teams faced their computer to answer 100 challenging questions in the event, earning points for the speed and accuracy of their answers.

The thirty-four third, fourth, and fifth grade students on the Milenio team scored 703 of 1000 points to place second in Arizona. They also placed 12th out of the 244 schools that competed around the world.

Academic coach Cindi Petera described the event as "extremely exciting and challenging. My students came into the competition very focused and worked together as a team. In fact, it was the most impressive team effort that I have seen throughout the years. We try to concentrate on the teamwork strategies and improving our scores from one competition to the next. I am extremely proud of my students."

Students on the Milenio team were: Fifth graders: Fifth graders: Tyler Allen, Chyann Croley, Dalton Danks, Marisa Gomez, Alan Huang, Daniel Lawrence, Kayla Losey, Gabe Ornelas, Sneha Raola, Eric Taylor, Luis Valles, and Waun Washington. Fourth graders: Bowen Clark, Kyler Colin,Jonathan Glenn, Ziad Hindosh, Will Leung, Devon Martinez, Ahkila Murella, Lucas Redshaw, Tony Sutton, Laura Tran, Samantha Schutkowski, and Sydney Schutkowski. Third Graders:  Noah Garrison, KellyJohnson, Amy Lin, Mackenzie Saunders, Sagar Sheth, Daniel Volkmann, Haley Witt, Vivian Wu, and Andrew Xi.  Second Grader:  Michaella Hernandez.

Designed to stimulate learning and teamwork, the Knowledge Master Open runs on classroom computers to allow all students the opportunity to compete in a large academic event without expense of traveling to a central site. The competition is presented twice each school year by Academic Hallmarks, a Colorado software publisher.
